David Deming, Claudia Goldin, and Lawrence Katz. “For-Profit Colleges” The Future Of Children. Vol. 23/No. 1/Spring 2013 ; 5 pages

Done by Harvard students and Professors, we can look at the extension of Carey’s arguments. In this reading it can be shown that For-Profits can provide benefits to the students that attend them rather than the horror stories most often heard about.

“In the face of sluggish growth to state funding for public institutions, for-profit colleges have grown  rapidly to meet demand and have taken advantage of expanded federal student aid.”

“Finely attuned to the marketplace, the for-profits are quick to open new schools, hire faculty, and add programs that train students for jobs in fast-growing areas such as healthcare and informational technology.”

“…programs of short duration that prepare students for a specific occupation. But the for-profit completion rates, default rates, and labor market outcomes for students seeking associate’s or higher degrees…..”

Holly Petreaus. “For-Profit Colleges, Vulnerable G.I.’s” from The New York Times, 09/21/2011. Magazine Article. 2 pages.

Although this article is relatively short, it provides insight into the corruption of For-Profit schools, specifically looking towards military veterans. According to Petreaus, military vets looking to return to school often are preyed upon by for-profit universities throughout the nation.

“This gives for-profit colleges an incentive to see service members as nothing more than dollar signs in uniform, and to use aggressive marketing to draw them in and take out private loans, which students often need because federal grants are insufficient to cover the full cost of tuition and related expenses.”

“…compared with other schools, for-profit colleges generally have low graduation rates and a poor record of gainful employment for their alumni. A number of non-profit colleges have questionable academic credentials or lack accreditation accepted by other institutions.”
