Carey Response
Carey’s
overall argument seems to be stated in paragraph two of his article, “Twenty
years ago, a series of high-profile Congressional hearings, Led by Senator Sam
Nunn, revealed widespread fraud in the industry, and the resulting reforms
almost wiped schools out. But they hung on and returned with a vengeance in the
form of publicly traded giants like the University of Phoenix.” The main point
is distinguishing between the positive and negatives of for profit schools.
Carey’s main claims are outlined in paragraphs three, ten, and halfway through
eleven. In order to support these claims Carey utilizes statistics, examples,
and testimonies. After reading the text, there were several areas that were
very persuasive to me. Carey caught my attention by weighing both non-profit
schools and for profit schools against each other. By doing this a reader can
easily see both sides of the coin, and I think that this was why his article
was so persuasive.
